The NZ News Online NZ Police to build from shooting of paraplegic man in wheel chair. NZ Police were feeling positive after yesterday's successful shooting of a paraplegic man in a wheelchair in Christchurch, but, they warned they still have a long way to go until they were back to shooting minority courier drivers in high speed motorway pursuits. The NZ Police received large amounts of criticism for their failure, to shoot an armed gunman in Napier, during May's standoff. The standoff lasted 40 hours and then the man just shot himself before they had a chance to get in there and blast away. That was
despite police outnumbering the gun man by over 100 to 1, having members
of the Armed Offenders Squad, Special Tactics Group and a tank. The man,
a John Rambo, was however known to have some military training.Senior Sergeant Greg Jefferson had this to say "Yes, the boys are feeling very positive after the chance to shoot a handicap in the face, however I must stress, that there is a long way to go yet in the rebuilding process. It will be some time until we are blasting innocent bystanders willy nilly while playing cops and robbers, but, with this Mahoney!!!!! we are well on the way". He continued: "We just need to build from here, next shoot a minority in a bank, hopefully they'll be robbing it, that would be even better. By the summer we should be able to shoot out the side of the car while doing a jump over a ramp in a high speed pursuit. That would be so sweet". Justice Minister Judith Collins was very supportive of the police current tactics, in a press conference Ms Collins had this to say: "I think it's fantastic, this shoot first and ask questions later method is much cheaper than a lengthy court battle and then throwing them in a container ship or a death pit even".
