The NZ News Online Michael Laws: "Why don't you child eating Maoris go back to where you came from!" 4 September 2009 Wanganui/Whanganui Mayor Michael Laws is facing criticism after writing a strongly worded letter to a class of 11 year olds children in which he says that he would not listen to a word said by any Maori until they stop eating their children. Earlier
in the week, the class of school children from Otaki school, had written
letters to Mr Laws asking him to put the letter h back into Wanganui as
they believe this to be the correct spelling. They put forward their
reasons to support this belief, detailing that Wanganui has no meaning
in Maori. Mr Laws, has been incensed that some "bloody Maori children" would dare question his authority as colonial overlord of the township of Wanganui. In his letter he detailed how these children were a drain on his town and that instead of wasting his important time, being Mayor of a town you couldn't pay people to visit, they should be solving the problems facing Maori. In his letter he wrote: "Once you So, So, Dirty natives stop eating babies and start cleaning yourselves properly and stop smelling rather rotten, then, maybe I'll try and spell your words correctly." Following criticism for his letter, Mr Laws has invited the children for high tea with the hope of civilising them by the serving their scones with clotted cream. Mr Laws said: "Yes, did you know these savages cook their food in the ground? Unbelievable, I know, but true!" So far, the students have turned down his offer, for fear of Mr Laws putting them to work in his plantation. When asked to comment, one of the parents of the children at Otaki school said: "Wanker".
